The Heart Follows the Treasure
Read Matthew 6:19-34
Jesus isn’t against self-interest – he is against foolish self-interest. How foolish, according to Jesus, to spend your life amassing wealth and goods that will wear out, may be stolen, lost through market downturns, or subject to all manner of calamities. And in the end we leave it all behind anyway. Rather, Jesus advises, lay up treasures for yourself in heaven, where the rewards God gives for faithful living do not wear out, cannot be stolen, and can never be lost.
Then he says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (6:21). The condition of our heart shows in the location of the treasures we are amassing. Is the portfolio all in earthly treasures, or is it balanced by significant investments in eternal reward?
But Jesus has given us more than a diagnostic. He’s given us a way to steer our hearts toward eternity. Do you want to train your heart heavenward? Increase your investment there. Send some (more) or your treasure there. The heart will follow. Jesus guarantees it.
