The Unforgivable Sin

Read Matthew 12:22-37

To blaspheme against God’s Spirit, Jesus says, is the unforgivable sin (12:31-32).  Does that mean that you can say certain demeaning, insulting words about the Holy Spirit, and that there can be no forgiveness afterward, ever, no matter what?

No, no living person is forever beyond saving because of words spoken in the past.  But when the Holy Spirit gives someone a sense of his own sin before a holy God, and provides a witness to forgiveness of sin through faith in Jesus, he is offering the only avenue for forgiveness that God has given.  The Spirit’s witness must not be disparaged as something malign or of no consequence.  God’s Spirit shines his light on the path to forgiveness.  There is no other.
