To Doubt Is to Sink, But to Cry Out Is to Be Rescued

Read Matthew 14:13-36

How many steps did Peter take on the surface of the water?  It was enough so that it could be said that, “Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus” (14:29).  That certainly sounds like more than a step or two.  It was his faith in Jesus that got him out of the boat, and more impressively, his faith in Jesus that kept him on the surface of the sea.  What a great example of faith!

No, wait.  The sight of the raging storm blew away his faith, and swamped his soul with doubt.  “What was I thinking?,” he may have thought.  So it is with people like us, one moment confidently believing God with all our heart, and the next frantically crying out for his deliverance.  “Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him” (14:31).  That’s what a Savior does.
